Eat your water | Fluid intake for toddlers
10:30
Babies that are under the age of one tend to get the majority of their nutrients and fluid intake through their milk. According to babycenter.com Children between 1 and 3 years old require about 44 ounces of fluid per day. This doesn’t mean they have to drink that much water a day as luckily 20% of their fluid intake comes from certain foods you give them.
It’s important as your baby turns one that you offer them water with every meal and with snacks in-between. The more they become accustomed to the taste the more likely they will enjoy it and won’t demand juice as a preference. In the hot weather it is even more important that you really do encourage water for them to stay hydrated, especially if you are outside in the sun. It’s important to keep an eye on your baby’s nappy/diaper to make sure that they are urinating at least every six to eight hours. Also keep an eye out for signs of severe dehydration (such as sunken eyes, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, cold splotchy hands or feet) and take them immediately to the hospital.
1. CUCUMBER - 96.7% water
Cucumber has the highest content of water in any solid food. So it goes without saying really that this yummy and refreshing snack will help your toddler get their recommended fluid intake. Cut it into shapes to make it that little bit more fun for them too!
2. TOMATOES - 94.5% water
Tomatoes are again a bit of an obvious one! Buy smaller cherry tomatoes and serve for your toddler as a snack, they are so finger friendly and pop a burst of flavour in your mouth.
3. WATERMELON - 91.5% water
Pretty much every baby or toddler we've met LOVES watermelon. It's such a fun, lovely, summery snack and most children enjoy sitting there with a big slice, getting mucky and enjoying it as a refreshing snack. Tasty!
4. BROCCOLI - 90.7% water
Broccoli goes great with most dinners and although children can be a little fussy about eating their vegetables, with broccoli you have the advantage of it looking like a tree.. which can sometimes help encourage children to eat it!
5. STRAWBERRYS - 91.0% water
Again, like with watermelon, I don't know many babies or toddlers that don't enjoy strawberry! They are such a yummy and refreshing snack and has the added bonus (not so much for us parents) that it's messy ;)
So if you feel as though your child isn't getting a high enough intake of water then there are five yummy fruit/vegetables that are so high in water that they practically may be drinking it!
